Mise en scene is the arrangement of scenery and properties to represent the place where a movie is enacted.
In the scene the setting of an abandoned where house is used. This setting is used because before any situation can occur the audience is already worried and intrigued to find out what will happen. Also in the scene, there is a man attached to a machine. The machine is rusted with lots of sharp points but also it looks high tech and elaborate. This straight away gets the audience thinking as only a mad man could invent such a punishing device. The whole set builds up the audiences expectation that something terrible and bloody will happen, therefor it sets the whole scene up perfectly.

The victim is wearing a shirt and tie, looking as if he had came from his workplace. He has a heavy wound that is bleeding through his shirt. This gets the audience thinking why he was in the room and how he had got there. The fact that he is in normal everyday work clothes shows us that he is know one special which makes terror even more real. The audience is scared as he looks as if he is a innocent civilian and if it happened to him it could happen to them.
When the victim wakes up he straight away shows sense of terror as he screams and throws himself around violently. This shows the audience that he does not know where he is and he wasn't expecting anything like this as he generally is scared for his life. This again scares the audience as they feel like if it happened to this every day man why can't it happen to them.
As the scene continues the victim doesn't move from within the centre of the frame. This draws the audience towards him as so they are not aware of the other victim next to him. Also the spot light is fixed on him, showing his importance to the audience. Apart from the spot light the whole scene is dark, this makes it feel mysterious as not everything in the room is shown
, making it hard for the victim and audience to make out where he is. When the "game" starts the lighting flickers and changes to brighter. This gives of a dramatic effect as now the audience and victim can see the whole machine that he is hooked to.
